Description: Analyzed the National Educational Technology standards for teachers, students, coaches and administrators for grades K-12.
Impact: Before this week I had never heard of the National Educational Technology Standards nor was I even aware that there were technology standards. It makes me so sad that I am just learning about these standards- I teach in a school that uses technology every day! I am very interested to find out if any of my colleagues even know about the technology society. The only standards I am aware are for the content I teach and those are neither as organized nor as easy to comprehend as the ISTE Technology standards. I am amazed that with all of the technology conferences and PD I have attended I have never learned about ISTE.
I am embarrassed to admit that I do not have technology standards in my classroom. In all honesty the last couple of years my biggest concern is that students access inappropriate sites. If a student is caught on one of those sites, they lose their computer for a week in my class.
Intent: As a result of this lesson I want to incorporate the NETS into my classroom and challenge my students to follow the standards when completing an online assignment. I also want to build the standards into my grading rubric. I am not sure what this may look like but I plan to research more about these standards and find teachers who use them in their lessons every day.
I was also intrigued by the NETS for students Curriculum planning tool for 9th through 12th. Many of the examples are activities that I think my students would find educational, engaging and fun. In addition using these examples as activities would make the lessons more authentic and continue to make my 9th graders college and career ready!
